Civil War Anniversary Quilts, #3, block 34

Sorry, I've been away with a computer down and camera on the fritz--here I begin the catch up without photos (sorry)

34 (#132) One of the Hardest Battles (pg.262)

Warning--I’ve cut and pieced this 2 times (and individual parts more than that since I cut some of the pieces wrong) and this is not working for me as I’m not sure how much to hang tips out. So I’ll be paper piecing it, probably. I haven’t given up yet so new rotary instructions may be coming to you.

According to the disc:

2 colors (pink and green)

A. 2 @ 2 3/8” squares of pink and 2 @ 2 3/8” squares of green cut on one diagonal --these will be the corners of block (eventually!)

B. 2 @ 2 7/8” X 2 1/16 pink square cut on 1 diagonal from top left to bottom right (2 squares total for 4 triangles)

C. 2 @ 2 7/8” X 2 1/16 green square cut on 1 diagonal from lower left to top right (mirror image of the pink ones)

D. Cut 2” X 13” pink rectangle--using 45 degree line on ruler along short edge, cut from top corner on left making a 45 degree cut. Put 45 degree line on top and Measure 1 ¾” over on ruler (it’s actually 2 ½” if measured across the top and bottom--feel free to measure this way and make tic marks) and cut a parallel 45 degree line--cut 4 total.

E. Cut 2” X 13” green rectangle--using 45 degree line on ruler along short edge, cut from bottom corner on left making a 45 degree cut. Put 45 degree line on top and Measure 1 ¾” over on ruler (it’s actually 2 ½” if measured across the top and bottom--feel free to measure this way and make tic marks) and cut a parallel 45 degree line--cut 4 total. This is a mirror image of the pink ones. You can put the pink and green strips together, wrong sides matching, and cut all 8 diamonds at the same time.

1. Sew Green C triangle to left side of pink diamond along diagonal edge of triangle. Press to pink. Make 4

2. Sew Green A triangle to right side of pink diamond tip unit from Step 1 (see picture for placement--you’ll be sewing the horizontal leg of the ‘L’, no diagonal edge) Make 4, press to pink.

3. Sew Pink B triangle to right side of Green diamond along diagonal edge of triangle. Make 4, press to green

4. Sew Pink A triangle to left side of green diamond unit made in step 3. Press towards green, make 4

5. Sew Unit from step 2 to unit in step 4 along diagonal side, matching the pink-green point at top of diamond. Trim this unit to 3 ½” if necessary. Make 4

6. Sew units from step 5 together as if making a 4 patch. 6 ½” star block, congrats!

Good luck--I’ll do this again after the frustration is gone!!
