Have the Blues Sometimes, Block 16, Civil War Letter Quilt

Block 16 (# 114, page 244 from Civil War Anniversay by Rosemary Youngs)
Here we go again. The best way to make this is by paper pieceing.

Given that:

4 colors

Cream: 2 5/8" square

Cheddar: cut strips 7/8" X 2 3/4", you'll need 12

2 @ 2 1/4" square cut on 1 diagonal

Indigo: cut strips 7/8" X 3 14", you'll need 12

2 @ 2 1/4" square cut on 1 diagonal

Grey:

Round 1: 2 @ 1 1/2" square cut on 1 diagonal

Round 2: 2 @ 1 7/8" square cut on 1 diagonal

Round 3: 2 @ 2 3/8" square cut on 1 diagonal

Round 4: 2 @ 2 5/8" square cut on 1 diagonal

Round 5: 2 @ 2 3/4" square cut on 1 diagonal

Round 6: 2 @ 3 1/4" square cut on 1 diagonal

1. Sew Cheddar strips to opposite sides of square. Then sew indigo to other sides. Add right triangle of grey from 1 1/2" square to each corner--making sure to sew to but not past the cream point. With Cheddar strip at top, square up unit to 3 1/4"

2. Sew Cheddar strips to opposite sides of square, centering strip. Then sew indigo to other sides. Add right triangle of grey from 1 7/8" square to each corner--making sure to sew to but not past the cream point. Square up unit to 4".

3. Sew Cheddar strips to opposite sides of square, centering strip. Then sew indigo to other sides. Add right triangle of grey from 2 3/8" square to each corner--making sure to sew to but not past the cream point. Square up unit to 4 3/4".

4. Sew Cheddar strips to opposite sides of square, centering strip. Then sew indigo to other sides. Add right triangle of grey from 2 5/8" square to each corner--making sure to sew to but not past the cream point. Square up unit to 5 1/2".

5. Sew Cheddar strips to opposite sides of square, centering strip. Then sew indigo to other sides. Add right triangle of grey from 2 3/4" square to each corner--making sure to sew to but not past the cream point. Square up unit to 6 1/8

6. Sew Cheddar strips to opposite sides of square, centering strip. Then sew indigo to other sides. Add right triangle of grey from 3 1/4" square to each corner--making sure to sew to but not past the cream point. Square up unit to 6 3/4"

7. Add Cheddar and Indigo triangles made from 2 1/4" squares to each corner (Cheddar to cheddar and Indigo to indigo).

Turn block so grey is at top, square block to 6 1/2".

(now, go make a copy of the picture in the book and do some paper piecing, not just the best way--it's also the easiest!)
